It seems like moviegoers like Crazy Rich Asians, as the rom-com won the weekend box office for the third straight weekend! This is normally a slower time for movies, as the end of summer is spent doing other things then going to the movie theater. However, Crazy Rich Asians has still managed to rake in over $100 million at the domestic box office!
Crazy Rich Asians had the biggest opening weekend for romantic comedies in three years. Since then, it has held it's own and only dropped 6.4 percent in it's second weekend. There has been a lot of word-of-mouth advertising for this movie, plus the fact that there has not been any real direct competition for the movie. Because of that, they rode the wave to another win this past weekend.
Per Box Office Mojo, Crazy Rich Asians took home $22.2 million this past weekend. That is another strong weekend, as it's only a drop of 10.4 percent from the week before. This also gives it a domestic box office total of $110.9 million. That is huge, especially since the production budget was only $30 million. This would definitely explain why Warner Bros. has greenlit a sequel already!
As far as other movies go, the World War II drama Operation Finale opened this past weekend, but only took home $6 million to come in fourth place. Kin also opened this past weekend and earned $3 million for a 12th place finish. Searching got some positive buzz from reviews and people thought it might do decent at the box office. It played in 1,207 locations and earned $5.7 million. This one could grow as time goes on, especially with the positive reviews.
For the rest of the top five, we have Jason Statham's The Meg grossing $10.3 million for second place. In third place was Mission: Impossible - Fallout starring Tom Cruise, which earned $7 million in its sixth weekend. That brings the total to $204.3 million for its domestic total.Share:
