Tom Hardy is heading back to the comic book world, as he has transformed into another comic book figure. This time he will play Venom, as the first Venom teaser trailer was releaser earlier today for director Ruben Fleischer's Spider-Man0based movie.
In Hardy's first comic book movie, he played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. He will now take on Eddie Brock, a character played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and Ryan Kwanten in Adi Shankar’s unofficial short film.
As we see it, Eddie is a journalist that is taken over by the sentient symbiote alien to become the classic villain better known as Venom. In reality, Venom is more of an anti-hero. In the teaser trailer, Eddie says, “You used to be one thing, now you’re something else."
Keep in mind, this is not the official trailer for Venom and it is only a teaser. In the teaser, we see footage of Riz Ahmed (HBO’s The Night Of) as he hovers over a container housing the symbiote substance. We also see Michelle Williams (All the Money in the World) and Reid Scott (HBO’s Veep) in some sort of test facility. We also see scenes of a crash site (most likely where the symbiote touched down on earth) and Eddie convulsing as something takes over, as he says, “We all have our own problems, our own issues, our own demons.”
When asked about the movie, Fleischer said it was primarily based on the comic book arcs Venom: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. Fleischer said, “I can promise you badass action, Venom’s dark humor, and I can also promise you an absolutely stunning performance by Tom Hardy.”
Sony has made it known that Venom is not a spin-off to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Other projects are in the works based on characters from Spider-Man's world. For now, enjoy the Venom teaser trailer here:
Venom is based on a screenplay by Scott Rosenberg, Jeff Pinkner, Kelly Marcel, and Will Beall and will hit theaters on Oct. 5, 2018.
