It is Pi Day and Albert Einstein's birthday, so it is fitting that Stephen W. Hawking died early this morning. Hawking, a brilliant physicist and Cambridge University staff member, was 76 at the time of his death. Since his death was announced by Cambridge University, celebrities have been reacting and sharing their condolences.
One of those celebrities happens to be The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne, who paid tribute to the man he played on the big screen. In his statement, Redmayne said:
We have lost a truly beautiful mind, an astonishing scientist and the funniest man I have ever had the pleasure to meet. My love and thoughts are with his extraordinary family.
In the 2014 movie, Redmayne portrayed a young Stephen Hawking. The movie show Hawking while he was still a student at Cambridge University. It shows the period of time when his muscles began to fail, which was during the early years of his romance with Jane Wilde. Hawking happened to enjoy Eddie Redmayne's performance, as he said it was an authentic portrayal.
I thought Eddie Redmayne portrayed me very well in The Theory of Everything movie. He spent time with ALS sufferers so he could be authentic. At times, I thought he was me.
It must have been an authentic portrayal, as he won the Academy Award that year for Best Actor. After his victory, the famous physicist congratulated the actor for his work on the movie.
I am very intrigued to see how The Big Bang Theory handles Hawking's death, as he has appeared on the show. They often reference Hawking on the show, so I think his death is really going to effect those characters and a special episode will be coming. We will have to wait for that episode, but for now, we mourn the loss of an amazingly intelligent man.
