A Celebration of Cinema Across the UK

www.scalarama.com @scalarama

Now in its fourth year, Scalarama is an annual celebration of cinema, showcasing the different ways people come together to watch films, filling the land with cinemas every September.

With over 500 diverse events in over 300 venues in over 100 cities already confirmed to take place in September, this is the largest openly sourced season of film events, each one chosen by a different organisation or individual. Adventurously programmed with passion and enthusiasm, for one month exhibitors across the country will demonstrate the diversity of cinema in all its forms, bringing excitement to communal film watching for a whole new generation.

New to this year, partner website Screening Film and Scalarama will present a new interactive map so eager film fans across the UK can find screenings in their area based on their location and preferences. Visit www.screeningfilm.com for more information

Working with a range of distributors, curators and archives, Scalarama will revive several key titles as part of a Core Programme, bringing lost or rare gems back to the big screen. Titles this year include John Waters’ Polyester, now complete with the original Odorama scratch n’ sniffs cards, a new restoration of the silent German Expressionist classic Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari and a selection of Children’s Film Foundation films.

Films that courted controversy on their first release are also included, such as Wes Craven’s uncut directorial debut Last House on the Left on 35mm, Jörg Buttgereit’s x-rated Nekromantik (released uncut) and Daisies, the late Věra Chytilová’s groundbreaking and originally banned riotous satire. There are two incredible Sci-Fi films: The Visitor, an intergalactic tale starring John Huston & Sam Peckinpah and Phase IV, Saul Bass’ only feature, with its original, unseen psychedelic ending!

Béla Tarr’s epic seven-hour masterpiece, Sátántangó, Charles Lane’s black and white silent comedy Sidewalk Stories and Kinetta the debut film of Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos add great range to the season, whilst restorations of the first six films of Jim Jarmusch complete the line up.

A bespoke newspaper detailing all of the events and Core Programme titles, and including contributions for Martin Scorsese, John Waters, Jörg Buttgereit and Iain Sinclair, will be distributed across the UK.
