New Jerusalem is directed by Rick Alverson and is a fascinating character study between Sean, played by Colm O’Leary who is a co-writer and Ike, played by Will Oldham. The film explores existentialism, specifically the debate between secularism and evangelism. This indie film takes the risks you want to see from films made outside the Hollywood system. While the pace is slow the film is never dull.

It sucks you into the every day life of these two characters. Oldham perfectly plays his character’s sincere empathy for a suffering man and the character and the story never become self-righteous. O’Leary as Sean is clearly skeptical but he neither rebuffs nor embraces Ike’s positions as he struggles with demons that are never explained.

It’s a wonderful movie that raises lots of questions where the audience has to find their own answers.
