The Januaries: The Januaries

Foodchain/WEA

Rating: B+

This is a debut? This album is tight from start to repeat. For their first effort this LA based group has produced a wicked update to the much abused 60’s retro sound. Their sound is fresh with live (not sampled) horns, fuzz guitars, loops and lush female vocals. The singer, Debbie Diamond, has a quality that can fool you into thinking that this is some unreleased Brigitte Bardot/Serge Gainsbourg album. It’s hard to believe that Diamond used to front a punk band. On the easier to believe side, guitarist and co writer, Rick Boston was responsible for producing the latest Jonie Mitchell album. With this range of influence and experience it’s easy to see why this album stand apart form the rest. I like their record label’s web-site, it’s in 3D.
