Talk about a winning cast, huh? Melissa McCarthy, Elisabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish will be starring as mob wives turned mobsters, as we have a first look photo of The Kitchen. This new movie is based on the Vetigo comic book series with the same name, which happens to be written by Ollie Masters and illustrated by Ming Doyle. Check out The Kitchen photo below!
The Kitchen movie will written and directed by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton, Blood Father). This will be the first time Berloff is calling the shots behind the camera. The cast also includes Common, Domhnall Gleeson and Margo Martindale.
As we shall see, the movie and comics both take place in Hell's Kitchen circa the 1970s. The story revolves around three women (McCarthy, Haddish and Moss) whose husbands happen to be top-ranking members of the Irish mafia. The husbands are arrested by the FBI, so the trio of women take over the family business in their absence. Go figure, but the wives happen to be better at it then their husbands!
This first official photo comes from Entertainment Weekly, who also got a quote from Berloff while they were on set. Berloff talked about casting comedic females as the leads:
“I wanted that excitement of women in a Mob movie to permeate through the casting, so I cast people you wouldn’t expect across the board. If we’re defying stereotypes, let’s defy them all over. Who says women can’t run the Mafia? Who says comedians can’t do drama?”
Both Haddish and McCarthy seem to be showing off a more versatile acting resume, which is why they probably jumped at this opportunity. Check out the first look photo of The Kitchen here:
