It may be the final film for Madea, but it wasn't enough to take down How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World this past weekend at the box office. How to Train Your Dragon 3 held strong, as it took in $30 million in it's second weekend to nab the top spot in the weekend box office numbers!
We had the opening weekend for A Madea Family Funeral, which is Tyler Perry's final movie as madea. This is the ninth movie in the Madea franchise and it performed a lot better than expected, as it took in $27 million for the weekend. Those figures are the fourth highest opening for the Madea franchise.
Coming in besides the big winners for the weekend box office was Alita: Battle Angel, which finished in third place with $7 million. For fourth place, it was The LEGO Movie 2, which took in $6.6 million, which has now taken in $91.6 million domestically since it opened. Round out the Top 5 is Green Book, winner of Oscar's Best Picture last weekend. That Oscar win definitely helped boost the appeal of the movie, as Box Office Mojo reported it saw a +121% increase in box office numbers, as it earned $4.7 million. That brings up it's domestic total to $75 million since opening.
Greta was another new movie that opened this past weekend, but it couldn't crack the Top 5. It took in $4.58 million in 2.411 theaters, so only $1.902 per location. Not great numbers for the new movie, but it seems to be on par for what Box Office Mojo was predicting.
On a side note, Ralph Breaks the Internet did pass the $200 million mark domestically, which beat out the first film. The original made $189.4 million domestically back in 2012. We have Captain Marvel opening this weekend, so we should expect some huge box office numbers coming soon!
