What Men Want is a fantasy comedy loosely based on the famous 2000 comedy What Women Want. Alison Davis (Taraji P. Henson) drinks tea given to her by a psychic that somehow gives her the power to hear men’s thoughts. Alison, a sport’s agent hoping to become partner at the company she works for, quickly discovers that her sudden new skill may just help her do that. Throughout the movie the audience watches Alison take advantage of reading men’s minds as she ends up in some comical, as well as odd situations. In addition, Tracy Morgan plays Joe “Dolla” Barry, the father to a basketball player who is supposed to be the next best player on the scene. Joe Barry is an eccentric man and the final decision maker for his son’s future. Alison spends much of her time trying to impress Joe so she can sign his son.
Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan lead the movie with their comedy skills and do a great job of playing off each other. For the most part the movie isn’t too thought provoking except for the obvious fact that Henson’s character struggles at her job because of her gender. For instance, she learns that she never got invited to her coworker’s poker night because she is a woman. She appears to have to work harder than her male coworkers to get any recognition in her field. At one point the Me Too movement is even referenced in a scene between Nick (Brian Bosworth) and Alison. Nevertheless, if you are looking for something lighthearted and fun to watch on a weekend this would be a good choice. Famous athletes such as Shaquille O’Neal and Grant Hill pop up in the film with laughable cameos. Even though the movie is a bit predictable, it still comes with a few surprises.
