Surviving New Year’s is a refreshing film, that takes a unique look at what love is for a married couple and the friends they’ve invited to their New Year’s Eve party. This ambitious indie-gem has a wonderful ability to jump between characters without losing the audience. This technique is best used by film director Woody Allen (Hannah and her Sisters). Surviving New Year’s takes place in one location and maintains it’s entertainment value without exhausting the viewer of the same sequence of shots.
I’m drawn to independent films with something to say. Sometimes we need a movie to make us smile and occasionally that film will also capture the darker emotions of life. This is one of those rare films that delivers the yin-yang of comedy and drama. I don’t want to spoil the plot, but I do want to say in advance you have to pay attention to who is who (in the film’s first half hour). Simply because this film doesn’t have the star power that major films have, so you’re unable to identify who everyone is by name (acting name) alone.
Enjoy this film and be ready to see someone you know portrayed in one of these characters. For this film, art perfectly imitates life.
