John Wick: Chapter 4 delivers a near perfect action film in the latest installment
Keanu Reeves is the legendary hitman with a heart of gold, and for fans of the first three films in the franchise, this one absolutely delivers on all fronts.
The film picks up right where the last one left off, with John Wick hellbent on taking down the mysterious High Table. From there, the plot twists and turns in unexpected ways, taking the audience on a wild ride through the seedy underbelly of the assassin world.
One of the strengths of “John Wick: Chapter 4” is its commitment to world-building. The filmmakers have created a rich and intricate mythology around the assassin underworld, with its own set of rules, traditions, and rival factions. The audience is constantly learning more about this world and the characters who inhabit it, making for a truly immersive experience.
As we have come to expect, this entry has a stellar ensemble, including Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgård, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Lance Reddick (in one of his final roles), Rina Sawayama, Scott Adkins, and Ian McShane. Anderson as Mr Nobody, and Skarsgård as Gramont, introduce some new and intriguing villains to the mix.
Of course, the action is the real star of the show. “John Wick 4” features some of the most jaw-dropping and innovative action sequences ever put to film.
But the real standout is Reeves himself, who continues to impress as the stoic and deadly John Wick. Despite the character’s near-superhuman abilities, Reeves brings a vulnerability and emotional depth to the role that makes us care about his fate. Whether he’s taking on an army of goons with just a pencil or grappling with his own inner demons, Reeves is a magnetic presence on screen.
Another strength of “John Wick 4” is its visual style, crafting a world that is both gritty and glamorous. The film’s use of color and lighting is particularly striking, with each location and set piece having its own distinct look and feel.
If there is one weakness to the film, it’s that the plot can be a bit convoluted at times. There are several subplots and side characters that don’t quite land, and some of the twists and turns can be hard to follow. But ultimately, the film’s relentless pace and thrilling action more than make up for any narrative shortcomings.
In the end, “John Wick 4” is a must-see for action fans and anyone who appreciates top-notch filmmaking. It’s rare to find a franchise that keeps getting better with each installment, but that’s exactly what we have here. With its stunning visuals, bone-crunching action, and emotionally resonant performances, “John Wick 4” is a true masterpiece of modern action cinema.
