Fans of Big Little Lies were ecstatic to find out that HBO picked up the show for a second season. They are screaming in joy today, as it was announced that Meryl Streep would be joining the Big Little Lies Season 2 cast. This is huge news and should keep the awards coming after Season 2 airs.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Streep will be playing Mary Louise Wright, the mother to the abusive Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard). THR gave some spoilers for Big Little Lies Season 2, as it was revealed that Perry was the one who died during the first season, which is based on the Liane Moriarty novel. While his character died, Skarsgard will be returning in some capacity for Season 2.
The Hollywood Reporter stated that Mary Louise Wright is described as a woman who happens to be concerned about the well-being of her grandchildren after the death of her son. So, Mary Louise heads to Monterey searching for answers.
It looks like Season 2 is all written and ready to go, as David E. Kelley is confirmed to return and he has already written all seven of the scripts for Season 2. Like Season 1, the show will be somewhat based on the story written by Moriarty. According to HBO, the second season will explore the "malignancy of lies, the durability of friendships, the fragility of marriage and, of course, the vicious ferocity of sound parenting. Relationships will fray, loyalties will erode … the potential for emotional and bodily injury shall loom."
Both Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman will return to star in Big Little Lies. They will also serve as executive producers again.
Big Little Lies has seen a lot of success during the award show season. During the Emmys, they took home eight awards, which included Best TV Movie or Limited Series and Best Actress in a Limited Series for Nicole Kidman. The winning continued at the Golden Globes, as the show took home four awards. This included Best Limited Series and another win for Nicole Kidman.
Big Little Lies Season 2 is set to debut on HBO in 2019.
