The rumors have been swirling for Wonder Woman 2 and director Patty Jenkins confirmed them earlier today: Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig will be playing the villain in the Wonder Woman sequel. See, rumors do sometimes come true!
Late last month, the rumors started swirling that the Oscar-nominated Wiig was in talks to play the Wonder Woman villain role. At the same time, another report surfaced that Cheetah would be serving as the primary antagonist in Wonder Woman 2.
For the second Wonder Woman movie, Jenkins is returning to direct, as well as Gal Gadot reprising her role as Diana of Themyscira. Also, Wonder Woman costars Chris Pine, Saïd Taghmaoui, and Ewen Bremner are also supposed to be returning, but nothing has been confirmed.
As I stated, Jenkins confirmed the rumors this morning about Wiig playing Cheetah, as she posted on her Twitter account:
Geoff Johns and Dave Callaham (The Expendables, Godzilla) have written the screenplay for Wonder Woman 2 and it reportedly takes place during the Cold War circa the 1980s, according to ScreenRant. Also, the sequel will reportedly feature the Barbara Ann Minerva version of Cheetah from the DC Comics universe.
ScreenRant reported that Emma Stone was offered the role of Cheetah before Kristen signed on, but she passed on the Wonder Woman sequel. This could be because she was already signed on for Disney's live-action Cruella movie and it may start filming while Wonder Woman 2 is still in production.
Most of us know Wiig for her comedy work, as she is hilarious. This will be a far different role for Kristen, as she will be playing a complicated antihero. She has taken on the dramatic role before, so I am intrigued to see her in this role.
Production for Wonder Woman 2 is scheduled to begin in the UK this May.
