This week on Winners, Losers & Lovers, we’re revisiting Alex Proyas’ 1994 gothic revenge thriller THE CROW, starring Brandon Lee in his unforgettable final performance. Dark, atmospheric, violent, and dripping with early-’90s alternative culture, The Crow became a cult classic thanks to its incredible visual style, legendary soundtrack, and Brandon Lee’s haunting portrayal of Eric Draven.
But is the movie itself as good as its reputation? We love the look. We love the atmosphere. We love Michael Wincott as Top Dollar, David Patrick Kelly as T-Bird, and Ernie Hudson bringing some much-needed humanity to the madness.
And Brandon Lee gives us a performance that makes his tragic death all the more heartbreaking. But we’re not entirely sold on everything else. The mythology behind Eric Draven’s resurrection is barely explained, the villains have little development, and the supernatural rules seem to change whenever the story needs them to. Does any of that matter when a movie looks and sounds this damn good?
