Dan Trachtenberg has done it again. This week on Winners, Losers & Lovers, we’re talking Predator: Badlands, the movie that takes one of cinema’s most famous monsters and does something the franchise has never really attempted before: It makes us root for the Predator. Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi stars as Dek, a young Yautja outcast trying to prove himself by hunting the ultimate adversary. Along the way, he forms one seriously unlikely partnership with Elle Fanning’s Thia—and suddenly Predator becomes part monster movie, part sci-fi adventure, part buddy movie, and part coming-of-age story. And somehow… it works… or does it?

We break down Dan Trachtenberg’s continued reinvention of the franchise, Elle Fanning’s terrific performance, Dek as an actual protagonist, the creatures and action, the expanded Yautja mythology, the Weyland-Yutani connection, and whether making a Predator sympathetic takes away some of what made the creature terrifying in the first place.

Plus: Is the PG-13 rating a problem? Does Badlands belong alongside Predator and Prey? And where the hell does the franchise go from here? Winner. Loser. Lover. And this time, the monster gets to play the hero. What did you think of Predator: Badlands? Is Dan Trachtenberg officially the guy who should be running this franchise?
