Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin, has given his legions of fans a tantalizing taste of book six in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.
The famous author released a 6701 word excerpt from the hopefully soon-to-be-released Winds of Winter, on his website, which can be read in its entirety at www.georgerrmartin.com.
Winds of Winter Excerpt:
She was reading her little lord a tale of the Winged Knight when Mya Stone came knocking on the door of his bedchamber, clad in boots and riding leathers and smelling strongly of the stable. Mya had straw in her hair and a scowl on her face. That scowl comes of having Mychel Redfort near, Alayne knew.
“Your lordship,” Mya informed Lord Robert, “Lady Waynwood’s banners have been seen an hour down the road. She will be here soon, with your cousin Harry. Will you want to greet them?”
Why did she have to mention Harry? Alayne thought. We will never get Sweetrobin out of bed now. The boy slapped a pillow. “Send them away. I never asked them here.”
Mya looked nonplussed. No one in the Vale was better at handling a mule, but lordlings were another matter. “They were invited,” she said uncertainly, “for the tourney. I don’t… “
Alayne closed her book. “Thank you, Mya. Let me talk with Lord Robert, if you would.”

Sansa Lannister nee Stark, is now going by the name Alayne Snow, and she’s reading to frail Lord Robert Arryn of the Vale, or “Sweetrobin” as she’s taken to calling him here.
Although there’s still no sign of a release date for Winds of Winter, Martin has clearly been putting in the effort to get the long-awaited book closer to completion. The author didn’t write any episodes for season 5 of Game of Thrones, and he indicated that he wouldn’t be writing any of season 6 either. This is both good and bad news for fans. Good that he’s concentrating solely on the book. Bad that he won’t be contributing to the show.
The last book to be released from the Song of Ice and Fire series was A Dance With Dragons back in 2011. Let’s hope it’s worth the wait, although, so far Martin has failed to disappoint.
Season 5 of Game of Thrones starts on 12 April, and will be straying from the source material to some extent. Just how much is unknown. However, we’ll soon find out. We do know a lot of the show will concentrate on Dorne.
Roll on 12 April!
