James Gunn directs an exciting science fiction extravaganza that has a combo of dark humor mixed with grand character development and creative special effects.
Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is a scavenger swashbuckling across the galaxy. He comes across a mysterious and powerful orb that is being sought after by, what seems to be, everyone in the universe. He eventually teams up with a group of mercenaries to form the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The action is, for the most part, non-stop but it is nicely balanced by the in-depth character development. Gunn and co-writer Nicole Perlman show a thoughtful consideration for the back story and growth of the characters.
Zoe Saldana plays the villainous Gamora, and Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel pair up by providing their voices to bounty hunters Rocket Raccoon adn Groot.
The Cooper-Diesel combo is a highly entertaining and unexpected delight in this flick.
Guardians also sees performances from MMA fighter Dave Bautista, John C. Reilly, Glenn Colose and Benicio Del Toro.
*****
Guardians of the Galaxy presents a world which is easy to accept and characters that are joy to like and care for. It is a Best Picture contender, no, but it is both great and grand filmmaking mix with the qualities of an epic adventure. Ultimately, this is a very good movie.
