Bryan Huynh is a writer and filmmaker making things happen his way

by Gordon Shelly

Bryan Huynh majored in English, but after graduating college, he longed to go into entertainment. However, as can happen in life, he went in a different direction and entered the field of technology.

His current role in IT at a Fortune 500 defense contractor, has Huynh finding parallels with his goals as a filmmaker and writer. Both require planning, organizational skills, and an attention to detail — skills in which he feels he would “get lost” without.

While Huynh has seen himself as a filmmaker since the mid-1990s, it is a career he did not pursue until 2018. Since then, he has been actively writing. He has even written a movie trilogy inspired by a quote from Mother Teresa about “today, tomorrow, and yesterday.”

Today, his journey continues.

INFLUX: What are you currently working on that you can share with us?

BRYAN: Right now I’m in pre-production with [the] “Embracing Change” script. It’s tentative to start [production] in July 2025 with Michael Reyes as the director.

Also, currently, I’ve finished writing “Don’t Break Any Hearts.” This is my first attempt to write a romantic script. I love cheesy romantic movies [like] “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days,” “Serendipity,” “Sliding Doors,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” to name a few.

INFLUX: What are your hopes for your current project?

BRYAN: “It’s The Same” was to be my next project in 2025, but I had to scrap it. This project is important for me to show life’s perspective due to being different and labeled without not knowing who you are. I’ve replaced it with “Embracing Change,” about a step-mom [who] steps into a new family and the challenges that come with it.

INFLUX: What have been your greatest challenges as an indie filmmaker?

BRYAN: Back then, I believe my greatest challenge is turning script into a project. As an indie filmmaker I have to ask and answer to my own concerns — Who will finance it? What is your budget? Do I have have software to edit it? Do you have your own camera? I’ve realized it comes down to yourself and not depending on others to assist you.

INFLUX: What has been your most significant accomplishment as a filmmaker?

BRYAN: My highest accomplishment as a filmmaker and screenwriter, is getting accepted into festivals where I didn’t think I had a shot. Not only being accepted but getting recognized for the works: a top 5 finalist/nominee (2023) at Los Angeles Screenwriting Competition, a top 10 finalist (2023) at Vail Screenplay Contest, a top 5 finalist/nominee (2022) at Las Vegas International Film & Screenwriting Festival, and “Award of Achievement” short screenplay (short form) in season 19 (2024) and “Award of Excellence” season 14 (2022) at SoCal Film Awards.

INFLUX: Tell us about some of your past projects and where we can watch them if they’re available.

BRYAN: The trilogies (“Today,” “Tomorrow Never Came,” and “Yesterday Never Ended”) and “I Drum to a Different Puzzle” short films, are available on [my] YouTube channel.

INFLUX: What goals to you have for yourself moving forward?

BRYAN: Just believe in myself with great scripts and projects, and to get accepted into elite festivals (i.e. Sundance, Tribeca, Toronto. Palm Springs). That’s my “Mt. Everest’s” goal, per se.

INFLUX: What advice would you give to your younger self just starting out?

BRYAN: No one will come or give you a project to create. It’s all about you as a filmmaker to make it happen.
