Swingin’ Utters: Swingin’ Utters

Rating: A-

Fat Wreck Chords

Proudly displaying their penchants for not following rules, the Utters have released their fifth album that they call … Swingin’ Utters. Though not a debut release this album rocks like one with 15 tracks of hard driving and unrelentless retro punk. Yes, I coined a phrase, retro punk. I’m not saying that punk is dead; I’m just saying that something that started out with a “Live fast, die young” attitude has certainly beaten the odds of longevity.

Please, let me explain my retro punk reference as it applies to the Utters… This release can serve as an audio biography of punk music as it shamelessly draws familiarity from Social Distortion, The Pogues, The Ramones, Stiff Little Fingers, Bad Religion The Clash etc… This time around the lead vocals are shared by four of the members adding their take on the old school styles of punk icons before. Now take all that and pore it into a pint glass, serve it on a Friday night and you’ve got the makings of the working punks drinking music!
