How to Train Your Dragon is a satisfying remake of a beloved animated classic

by Ed B.

Dean DeBlois returns to the world of How to Train Your Dragon with a bold and visually impressive live-action adaptation that, while not as emotionally resonant as the original animated trilogy, still delivers a heartfelt and visually thrilling experience.

The transition from animation to live-action is handled with care and ambition. The dragons, especially Toothless, are rendered with breathtaking realism, blending seamlessly into the richly textured world of Berk. The film trades some of the whimsical charm of the original for a more grounded tone. It works, largely thanks to the striking cinematography and high production values.

The young cast, led by Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid, brings sincerity to the roles. They do not try to mimic their animated counterparts but instead reinterpret them with fresh energy. While the chemistry between characters takes time to build, their performances grow stronger as the film progresses.

Some creative changes, such as a darker portrayal of Stoick or a more intense focus on Viking tribal conflict, offer new dramatic depth but may feel like detours for fans expecting a lighter touch. However, these changes show a willingness to evolve the material for a different medium and audience.

Ultimately, How to Train Your Dragon (2025) is a successful reimagining. It may not fully capture the magic of its animated predecessor but it stands on its own as a well-crafted fantasy adventure with heart, spectacle, and just enough fire to keep the franchise soaring.
